Jihadi Jane – Tabish Khair

We have read about individuals sitting thousands of miles away, in a different country getting radicalised by following certain personalities on various social media platforms. Usually it is a snippet in some forgotten section of a newspaper.

How does it all happen? This has been the authors attempt to understand through the characters of Ameena and Jameela, high-school best friends living with their families in suburban Yorkshire who run away from home to join the Islamic State in Syria, believing fully in the cause and the importance of their role in it.

This book kept me at the edge of my seat till I finally turned the last page. The reality of religious fanaticism became more concrete. Though a fictional account, it could well be the story behind the multitude of faceless people we read about and forget as easily at the end of the day…
